Peter Kambouris (OH 1989)

Peter Kambouris (OH 1989) is a true guardian of south-eastern Australia’s stunning landscapes! For over 30 years, Peter has dedicated his life to parks, forests and emergency management. He currently serving as the Regional Manager for Forest and Fire Operations with Forest Fire Management Victoria (FFMV) in the breathtaking Grampians Region.

After finishing university, Peter’s passion for ecology took flight as he studied the effects of planned burns on small mammals. His journey has led him to write technical reports on a range of threatened species— varying from burrowing frogs, potoroos, gliders, and large forest owls —and publish important research on the impacts of timber harvesting and fire. With a wealth of experience at the Department of Energy, Environment and Climate Action, Forests NSW, and Parks Victoria, he has played a crucial role in reintroducing critically endangered species back to their rightful homes in national parks.

As a Regional Controller endorsed by Victoria’s Emergency Management Commissioner, Peter leads emergency responses during significant bushfire events, floods, tornadoes, and more. This year, he proudly supported communities affected by devastating fires in the Grampians and was even deployed as an Operations Section Chief to British Columbia, Canada, as part of Australia’s largest international emergency deployment in 2023.

Peter is also passionate about cultural fire practices, actively collaborating with Traditional Owners to restore these vital traditions across the Grampians Region.

With his wife Sarah and their two boys, Jonathon and Will, by his side, Peter continues to protect and nurture the landscapes he loves. Join us in celebrating his incredible journey and commitment to our environment!
