In Loving Memory – Louis Irving (OH ’68)

Louis Irving (OH ’68) died peacefully after a long battle with illness on December 31 surrounded by family.

In late 1970 Irving was one year into a three year course in Film and Television at Swinburne Institute of Technology when he spotted a notice for a vacancy for a Camera Assistant at Crawford Productions.

He won a Gold Australian Cinematographers Society award for Mushrooms (1989) and nominated for an AFI award for best achievement in Cinematography.

But it was TV drama where he has tallied up a huge amount of shooting hours including 124 episodes of Water Rats, plus Spirited, Love My Way, Heartland, Bastard Boys and 20 episodes of The Dr Blake Mysteries.

Lou graduated from Haileybury at the conclusion of 1968, a school where his father, uncles and brother also attended.

He was inducted into the Australian Cinematographers Society Hall of Fame in 2016, whose president described him on Facebook as the quintessential “quiet achiever”, an incredibly gifted cinematographer who believed in nurturing and encouraging “all students of film, and life in general.”
