Where are they Now – Andrew Whan (OH ’86)

Andrew Whan (OH ‘86) is a Radiologist at Barwon Health in Geelong. He initially started a Veterinary Science degree at Melbourne University, before switching after one year into Medicine at Melbourne University. After a gap year in 1990, during which he backpacked through Europe and North America, he returned to St Vincent’s Clinical School to complete the clinical component of his medical degree and graduated in 1993. Andrew then worked as a junior doctor at Austin Health and entered the radiology training program at Austin Health in 1997, completing his radiology training in 2001. He then undertook several subspecialty fellowships at Austin Health, St Vincent’s BreastScreen and Perth Radiological Clinic in MRI, sub-specialising in musculoskeletal MRI, brain and spine imaging as well as a breast imaging.
Andrew started work as a Radiologist at Barwon Health in 2003 and also worked at BreastScreen in Geelong, having undertaken several rotations to Geelong as a medical student. He became Director of Medical Imaging at Barwon Health in 2008 and was in that role for 10 years, which he found both challenging and rewarding. Since stepping down as Department Director, Andrew has taken on the role of Chair of the Senior Medical Staff group at Barwon Health. He is also involved in teaching medical students at Deakin University and training the next generation of Radiologists including as an examiner for the radiology training exit exams. Andrew says he “has found radiology a really fascinating and satisfying career with the mixture of diagnostic radiology and interventional procedures, the ability to significantly influence patient care and the constant evolution of the specialty related to technology and increasing medical knowledge”. He undertook a 6 month sabbatical in Oxford in 2014, with his wife and family, to gain further experience in paediatric imaging, neuroimaging and prostate MRI which he says was a “fantastic experience”.
Andrew met his wife at University and she works as a Rehabilitation Physician in Geelong. They have 2 sons in secondary school and live in Barwon Heads with their miniature dachshund Daisy. Outside of work and family, Andrew enjoys surfing, snowboarding, walking, cycling, gardening, reading, photography and is a passionate Richmond supporter. He is also passionate about nature and a strong believer in looking after our planet.
Andrew has fond memories of his school years at Haileybury and a great appreciation of the opportunities provided. He is looking forward to catching up and having a laugh with fellow class mates at his 35 year reunion scheduled later this year.
Looking forward to seeing you there, Andrew!
