Where are they Now – Sashi Balaraman (OH 2003)

Where are they now: Sashi Balaraman (OH 2003) is a true testament to the amazing journey that Haileybury offers! He has nothing but fond memories of his time at the School, which provided a wealth of opportunities that he grasped with both hands. Sashi’s Year 9 cohort was the first to go through the revamped Year 9 program uniting Year 9’s from all campuses. The camaraderie this forged was a particular highlight for him.

Fast forward to today, Sashi is the Executive General Manager, Strategy & Policy at Suburban Rail Loop Authority.

After studying Accounting and Law at Monash University, he worked as a Banking Lawyer at one of the top tier firms. His interest in politics led him to take 6 months off and volunteer for one of the USA democratic campaigns in New York.

When Sashi returned to Melbourne, his passion for politics was the catalyst for working in The Office of the Treasurer of Victoria for 6 years. The last 2 ½ years of that he was the Chief of Staff for State Treasurer, Tim Pallas. This was a challenging and exhausting role, not helped by the pandemic. While it was a very rewarding experience, he noted politics is not for everyone.

Sashi’s Class of 2003 is gearing up for an epic 20-Year Reunion on Friday, 20 October at the magnificent City campus. He is excited about catching up with his core group of school friends, reconnecting with those he didn’t know as well at school and checking out the City campus for the first time. He’s amazed at how much the School has changed in 20 years, from 1 Senior School to 3 Junior School campuses to now 4 ELC – Year 12 campuses, plus the Darwin and China campuses. Sashi has a great sense of pride in the changes Haileybury has undergone and being part of the broader community, and appreciates he is a small part of the puzzle.

On a personal note, Sashi’s adorable 1 ½ year old and lively border collie fills his bucket. Thanks for staying connected, Sashi!
